Sure, wasn't that long ago that a new one started and it's now got quite a lot of followers.

Sure, wasn't that long ago that a new one started and it's now got quite a lot of followers. I meant religion in a classic sense. Sure, the new religion ultimately also has a bearded guy (who's now in the sky), but never claimed to be a God. Only to have knowledge of the historical processes.

I doubt it - those who are interested are already aligned to one of those. You would need to find something for the people who have rejected the theist approach to religion. The again, who knows - apocalypse and all that, new dawn, old ways forgotten, new stuff emerges....

No, there's enough to keep the gullible going. Religion in the modern sense is more in the form of conspiracy belief and the like. Something that can get huge numbers believing something (or claiming to) that is patently untrue. In politics for example in the US you have the curious case of the ongoing belief in the "stolen election" Do people really believe it? or pay lip service to it as they feel it is something they should believe to go with their other stances. Away from politics you have belief in UFOs etc, things that are unlikely to the Nth degree but people still want a sense of wonder that sadly they can't find in the beauty all around of nature. Religion flourishes in the poorly educated and those who have been very strictly indoctrinated as kids, In the first world (outside the US) religion has largely decreased. The one growing area is youngsters turning to pagan/nature type beliefs which are far less harmful IMHO.

There’s a channel I watch on YouTube called Whatifalthistory, where he posits that China may see a new religion develop in the aftermath of the collapse of their regime. I forget his reasoning but he thinks they fit the criteria based on historical precedents.

I think religion is less likely to develop in an age where most people have access to vast information in their pocket. Mind you, that poses an interesting question: what happens if trade with China and other parts of SE Asia ceases? Will mobile phones be developed elsewhere and if so are they likely to be luxury items given potentially increased labour costs?

may rise in this day and age? Or maybe an old one resurrected? Mithraism or the cult of Ishtar? Yes. It will be a worldwide religion, and the penalty for noncompliance will be death.

Rather get rid of all existing ones, last thing we need is more, they've hardly been a positive thing for mankind.

Considering religion is on the decline (at least in western nations), at this point probably not.
