-Slightβ of hand vs. sleightβ
of hand
-βmy parentβs houseβ (if there are two parents, it should be parentsβ)
-βShe is one-years-oldβ (wrong punctuation; no hyphenation warranted)
βOne year old babyβ (wrong punctuation; hyphens in compound modifier required)
-βThinly-veiled threatβ (wrong punctuation; no hyphen needed as βthinly veiledβ is not ambiguous)

Just to kickstart this thread (this is on the "Stupid" board and the "I Am Outraged!" sub-board, after all), I'll give a few examples of things that tick me off: Use of subjective case instead of objective Ex: Between you and I - Incorrect Between you and me - Correct It's Nominative case instead of subjective, isn't it? Not knowing when to use "less" or "fewer." I once heard a local newscast begin with, "There will be less teachers in the school district next year." I got goosebumps all over like scratching a blackboard. Use "less" ONLY when modifying a quality and "fewer" when modifying a quantity. Or, "fewer" ALWAYS comes before a plural noun. Thus: Less education, fewer teachers Less money, fewer dollars Less power, fewer volts Less intelligence, fewer smarts

My knowledge of case names has tended to be shaky. After all, English has very few cases when compared to many other languages, so one would think I could keep them straight.

I sometimes do it deliberately. For example, if someone asks how the weather is, I'll answer that it's bacon hot. They're totally clueless about what I said because it sounds so close to baking hot, but I'm having a good old laugh inside. Ha!

This is a matter of personal taste, but it concerns a trend that to the best of my knowledge got started (in the mainstream, at least) no more than about 5-10 years ago is the use of "passed" as a euphemism for "died" without a following modifier.
Example: "My poor old uncle passed last year."
When I hear a phrase like that, I always want to ask, "He 'passed' what? An exam? The salt? A kidney stone? Something else that at one time would have been unmentionable in mixed company?"
Where it bothers me the most is seeing "passed" in a historical novel, in eras where no reasonably educated person would use simply "passed" without adding "away" or "on."
As I say, it's a matter of taste--but it's one current usage that really makes me grind my teeth!

Misuse of the following words:
Their There They're
And of these two:
Your You're
Once again, one can get into deep yogurt by trusting the spell-checker. It is a false friend, fellow IMDB-ites. Don't rely on it (at least not exclusively)!

"Whos worse ?"
Neither "Who's" or equally wrong "Whose" !
Too bad there is no "edit" feature available !
