All other ministers and reverends in all other churches and religions can and do. So why not priests and nuns? They could still not do premarital sex, get married and then boff. Why does the Catholic Church think of them getting married is a sin?
And I dunno how a priest or nun can stand it going through all those years without sex. A priest performs the wedding ceremony. Sometimes he must feel some envy.

A priest, monk, or nun is supposed to sacrifice their sexuality to God; however, this was not a rule until the 11th century and only then in the Latin Church. The Orthodox Church has had a married priesthood since they started ordaining them. Even so, there are exceptions to the rule. Priests in apostolic churches, such as the Episcopal, can be ordained priests in the RCC when they convert, and their marriages are still recognized.
The Apostle Paul encouraged celibacy for everyone because he believed Jesus was returning in his lifetime and thought sexuality would be an impediment to the righteousness necessary to earn a place the coming Kingdom of God, but he didn't say the priests should be celibate, especially since the "priests" were the owners or hosts of the home churches. If anyone considers St Peter as the first pope, then he was the first married pope.

That said, in regards to women who dedicate their lives to serving God & His Church in Catholic & Orthodox Christianity. Women who choose to remain cloistered are nuns. Women who work outside in the world are religious sisters. Just as priests work outside in the world & monks are the ones that are cloistered, so too the religious sisters work in the world, & nuns are cloistered.

Maybe it was founded by men who enjoyed other delights, much like the Catholic priesthood today.

By tradition, it was because they didn't want the priesthood to pass through generations and be a family profession.
BTW, I believe a Catholic priest can marry and have a dispensation.

Because Church wanted to inherit the priest's property instead of being handed to the Priest's family.
Short answer: money.

The Catholic Priesthood was a refuge for homosexual males in the Middle Ages. That may not have been the original reason, but it certainly strengthened the Catholic Church.

I don’t how much that factored in, but the medieval monasteries provided a refuge for the intellectually minded, especially women.

It definitely isn't a woman's company those priests are seeking.

Yes, lesbians seeking refuge from men may have been a big part of it as well.
You have to look at this way, in the Middle Ages a young gay male or a young lesbian had no choice but to marry the opposite sex and have children. The only way they could avoid that was to join the Catholic clergy.

I doubt too many men had problems justifying their particular sexuality since they don’t today. Some of the biggest religious homophobes are also practicing homosexuals. How they figure this out in their heads, who knows.

Just let me add I have Catholic family. They say all the priests are gay. So it's still happening.

Well this doesn’t account for all the priests with willing girl friends.

Well this doesn’t account for all the priests with willing girl friends. Yeah, that happens. But you have a lot of gay Catholic boys trying to work off their sins by becoming priests.
