While talking at the SXSW, Dev Patel spoke about how the film revolves around faith and how it's about what’s going on in India. “It’s really a revenge film about faith. How faith can be a beautiful teacher for the uneducated. For a kid who grew up in a forest, a mother can inspire the child with stories, iconography, and capture his imagination, but at the same time, faith can be weaponized and monetized. Personally, for me, I hope I don’t get in trouble for this. For me, Hinduism is a beautiful philosophy, and what’s going on in India is that we touch on all of these things and try to give a voice to the voiceless.” timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/news/dev-patel-says-monkey-man-is-about-whats-going-on-in-india/articleshow/108750891.cms

Considering how they hyped this up, its actually underperforming. It hasn't been a month in cinemas, its already available on VOD.
I've read they spent $16 million on marketing.
This should have been a Netflix like originally intended.
