I think that - both sides here are dishonest - there are migration movements in both directions - Rwanda is not the real trigger as it is not a real deterrent. (could it be that life in general gets too shitty in the UK for staying there?) . But then I wonder why migrants don't try to use French-Ireland connections directly (perhaps they already do?). We should not forget that there is an 'information asymmetry' - not only for us, but also for the asylum seekers. Better welfare support payments in Ireland?

I’ve just thought of a compromise… It’s closer than Rwanda and stuck in the middle of almost everyone.

Isle of Man?
That’s where we sent our Italian internees during the war.

Isle of Man? That’s where we sent our Italian internees during the war. See, that’s why this should not be a controversial plan. Of course we’ll have to build a wall around the island and have rocket launchers close at hand.

Instead of the Isle of Man some little island in the north of Scotland should do the trick - there are plenty! That will be more of a deterrent than Rwanda :P And the Cullen skink! Though now that Rhineland-Palatinate did send a chef as development aid, Cullen skink might be delicious for other people than Scots now, too! see here: Cullen skink souperstar named at world championshipswww.bbc.com/news/articles/cn04xzdz521oCarl LaFongby the way: last week I ate "Kipper Pate" and "Steak Pie" and "Bread 'n' Butter Pudding" in a German restaurant. it was a special event led by a Scottish lady I know. It was GOOD!

Probably not.
If they abolished the word no, it is unlikely that Northern Ireland would have any politics
Thor was talking about the Republic. not NI. Traditionally borders have two sides. In this case it is Northern Ireland on one side and leprechauns on the other. I wish the Republic no ill will, but it is no friend of the UK, so I will sit back and take a mild pleasure in Ireland's discomfort.

The Irish govt certainly thinks the UK’s Rwanda policy is a factor in the spike in the number of refugees crossing into the Republic. Not sure why nobbi doesn’t.

Not sure why nobbi hasn't been banned either but your question is good too.

Gets too shitty? They're refugees from post apocalyptic hellscapes the fuck are you talking about? The Irish govt certainly thinks the UK’s Rwanda policy is a factor in the spike in the number of refugees crossing into the Republic. Not sure why nobbi doesn’t. As I said: My suspicion is that BOTH SIDES ARE DISHONESI! The reason why the Irish govt. agrees with Rwanda as deterrent is probably INTERNAL and directed to the Irish public. I have no clue what they are cooking. Or it might be that it is not Rwanda itself that is the deterrent but more the unspoken threat of what other measures might be following additionally. My guess is that the migrants that cross the border from NI to RoI are not fresh ILLEGAL ones brought via boats, but some who have already spent many years longer in the backlog of disfunctional processing by the Home Office and are in despair. By the way, it might also be that there are people among them who initially came as LEGAL migrants bc they were invited but now flee bc they've been exploited. Regardless what's the underlying truth on the ground: Rwanda is of symbolic importance to politics but it's not so symbolic for asylum seekers. If there is ONE measure that I see as the greatest deterrent effect, it is regular inspections of workplaces known to often employ illegal migrants (construction sites, private care, ...). Check these for undeclared labour! But yes, You need staff doing that and the political will to do that. I still wonder why it's only the boats that are looked at. Why is Nigel Farage not at the road between Dover and Sevington inland border facility checking trucks? There may be plenty opportunities to unload illegal migrants on these 22 miles...
