Just remembered this....
Saw Apocalypse Now in the early 80s and really liked the music in the helicopter scene where they're riding towards the village.
Was in Windows, the local record shop, a few weeks later and saw a Japanese import singe on the wall. Remember imports? More expensive, right? Regular single maybe 79p at the time, this was probably £3.50.
It said "The End" on it. By some band I'd never heard of - The Doors.
"Is that the big orchestral music in the helicopter scene when they're riding over the ocean?" I wondered. "Must be, the scene was pretty end-ish", I thought, so I bought it.
Only to find it was not what I was hoping for and was some dirge by a load of hippies (imo at the time).
A few things:
1. Did not know Wagner at the time. 2. Did not know The Doors at the time. 3. Did not ask the shop assistant - derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
IDIOT.
