So I'm talking to the girlfriend about the book I just finished (The Leopard). And we got to talking about the film version which stars Burt Lancaster, Alan Delon, and Claudia Cardinale.
Girlfriend then starts talking about how sad it was that Cardinale died in squalor with nothing.
I then googled her and well, she's still alive.
Girlfriend insists there was an actress (possibly Italian) who was big in the 50s and died in poverty and squalor.
Any ideas?

Girlfriend says no. She doesn't seem to know. But reckons she was Italian.

Wrong decade, wrong nationality, but ask her if she's thinking of Maria Schneider who starred with Marlon Brando in Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris. She's asleep. Will check in the morning. But she seems adamant it was an Italian actress. There's every possibility she doesn't know her arse from her elbow though (she was also adamant it was Claudia Cardinale).

It was my first instinct because she was only 19 in Last Tango, so people confuse her with older actresses, and aside from working notoriously (and traumatically) with Bertolucci on Tango, her other hugely famous role was in Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger (1975).

Could be her. She was big in Hollywood during the 1950s.

Could be her. She was big in Hollywood during the 1950s. I don't think it's her. Angeli's career wasn't going as strong anymore because she was older, and male movie stars have a longer shelf life than the females. Terribly unfair, but that's how it is. I never heard anything about her dying in poverty and squalor. She was in love with James Dean, IIRC, and his death affected her deeply. I don't think it's anyone named so far. Anita Ekberg wasn't Italian. She was Swedish. Her appearance in that Fellini movie "La Dolce Vita" probably throws people off.

This could be based on what the OP’s friend means by “poverty and squalor.” Wikipedia says she crashed for while with her friend Debbie Reynolds before her death, so looks like she was homeless and not working.

One of the things that drew me to comment on this thread is that the guy who started it has no account here any more, so I can tell myself I'm right...
