Quite an eventful life, I would say.
Interesting that he was attracted to communism when young (as so many young people still are or, at least, socialism) but became vehemently against it after getting a dose of reality.
If only today's young could get such a dose and learn that the theory might sound great but is totally unimplementable because it goes against human nature, and there's only one winner in man vs nature.

"Quite an eventful life, I would say." Or a dilettante who couldn't make up his mind. Interesting that he became a religious prude as he got older, perhaps a sign of moving to the right politically.

"Quite an eventful life, I would say." Or a dilettante who couldn't make up his mind. Or someone who had the drive and imagination to do many things. I would say most people do only one thing through life because that's the only choice they have, not because they 'make their mind up'. Or maybe he just got fed up with all the free-loading, Labour-voting dole bums in the 60s, having made some actual effort himself during the war.
