I have been observing the pigeons in my street and what I believe I am seeing is a group of about 100 individuals living together in a group, on a patch of territory.
When resting, they always sit on the ledges of the same building. Then, every so often, they fly off en masse, flying up and down the street just above the buildings, criss-crossing over the street, over tops of the buildings, but in the same general up-the-street and down-the-street pattern.
Unless I am mistaken, this does not seem to be random - this is them patrolling the boundaries of their territory.
And once done, they always come back to the same spot.
Now I had previously thought that pigeon life was somewhat random - you fly around anywhere you feel like to find some food and bunk up wherever you happen to be for the night. But this appears to be very different - a social group with a defined territory.
Interesting.

Nah, we get the same ones (wood pigeons, not the more tatty variety) every day in my garden. They are out there now as I have just redone the bird table and freed it from snow. There is a definite pecking order (see what I did there?) involved though. They argue among themselves but get on fine with the smaller birds who feed side by side. Foxes and squirrels also been out there this morning.
