Nothing from younger authors? Must admit to not reading much sci fi these days, was more a teen thing for me. More modern ones that have impressed me are Adrian Tchaikovsky and China Mieville. No way an expert though.

I read a few sci-fi books, film derivatives such as Star Trek and Alien, fantasies and comedies (Conan Doyle; Tom Sharp) then took a look at heavier fare such as The Last Temptation (excellent stuff) and Nietzsche (good grief, turgid pointlessness) and a few PJ O'Rourkes (Holidays in Hell, Give War a Chance - marvellous) but once I found PG Wodehouse, I read nothing but.

Oddly enough I havent read many scifi books, not that I can remember right now anyway. Mostly crime/true crime. Some fantasy
Oh, I have read two books of the trilogy in which that Natalie Portman movie is based on, Annihilation

Weird ending as well, which was interesting.

I like John Varley and Vernor Vinge.
'A Fire Upon the Deep' is excellent.

Anything by Mike Moorcock. Agreed! Amazing works! Not so much his fantasy although I adored the "Eternal Champion stuff" as a kid, but his serious books show him to be one of the most underrated writers of his generation. His Colonel Pyat quartet are my all time favourite books, closely followed by "Brothel in Rosenstrasse", Mother London and Gloriana. Plus the Jerry Cornelius works of course (the world could do with Jerry right now, I like to think he's out there somewhere)

Moorcock even recorded a song of that title with his band Deep Fix. (not really my favorite song though. His Hawkwind collaborations turned out much better).

I like me some Ray Bradbury for his excellent creation of atmosphere. I also enjoy Ballard and Zelazny and Vonnegut Jr.

Yeah, I saw him live with Hawkwind in the 70's and the last time I saw them on The "Chronicles Of The Black Sword" (Elric based album) tour back in I believe mid 80's. He also added some guitar on Bob Calvert's "Hype" album if memory serves. "World's Fair" is an underrated album.

I like the girls. Elizabeth Moon, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula LeGuin. LeGuin would have got a Nobel literature prize if the snotty literati didn't think sci fi too lowbrow.
