Disgraceful how the working classes used to treat their children.

Slap me on the 'ead wiv a bread and butter pie, Mary's aged remarkably well, innit? Yuk, yuk. Jokes aside, my maternal grandfather lost his father very early, and so by age 7 he was working at an ice cream cone "factory" (it was more like a warehouse with a bunch of manned tables in it - little to no automation), sweeping the ice cream cone fragments out from under the tables. They hired only small children for this as they could fit under the tables more readily. At least he was only half-orphaned. Although it says this was a company in Oklahoma not NYC, it was this type of place but bigger: :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/__opt__aboutcom__coeus__resources__content_migration__serious_eats__seriouseats.com__2019__06__20190621-sanitary-ice-cream-cones-factory-library-of-congress-1500x1125-51c2a984450c467094698d6d33dbae45.jpg)
