My parents bought me a 1968 Mustang for my 16th birthday. Used, of course. Btw, they wanted to buy me one like the one the blonde in American Graffiti was driving (forgot the model), but I didn't like those. Sweet. My second car was brand new '75 Mustang. It was fire engine red and had a moon roof.

First car I ever part owned (one third share): Is that Valiant the one you took to Central Australia? Great cruising cars!

1965 VW 1500 Type 3. This started my love affair with Volkswagens. Low powered but with a low speed engine, once it got to cruising speed of around 140kph it would stay on it all day.

First car I ever part owned (one third share): Is that Valiant the one you took to Central Australia? Great cruising cars! Indeed. Bought in in Sydney, used it there for a couple of months, then went on a trip to Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, up the Oodnadatta Track to Ayers/Alice, through Mount Isa to Townsville, then I went north to Cairns and the two others went south and took it back to Sydney. It was pretty old to begin with (15 years? got it for $800 I think so must have been quite old) and how it survived the hundreds of miles of undulations is beyond me. (Actually, how we survived the undulations is beyond me.) Anyway, loved it! Stacks of room and it never gave up.

Ford Popular
Second hand, but it could snap knicker elastic at 100 yards, mostly because of my natural charm but partly because all my mates were riding mopeds
