I believe the Edsel was probably the first.
More recently, I think the Chrysler PT Cruiser was a dud, as well as the Dodge Magnum (which reminds me of a roach kinda shape).

For safety failings that lead to fire-related deaths, the Ford Pinto. Beyond being a fatal automotive disaster, it foisted then good guy and later election-spoiling nightmare, Ralph Nader, on us for decades. He was good news for Bush. I'd say W should make sure Nader is living his extremely senior years in comfort and cut him a check if he's not, but Nader has, or at least had, the most amazing stock portfolio you can imagine. Mofo knew what to buy and when, and he purportedly lives on peanuts and gives it all to the non-profits he started. He surely saved a lot of lives with his saga of fighting for consumer protections.
*begrudging respect for Nader's consumer rights work on top of begrudging respect for his stock portfolio*
*grinds teeth*

AMC had some yucky cars too. They also made these, and don't know why they stopped:

AMC had some yucky cars too. Bottom one looks a dead ringer for a Reliant Scimitar, is it the same car? My neigbour had one when I was a kid, was actually quite an impressive thing close up.

Nope, a bit taller and more flat, especially in back. I think some offerings like the Volvo Sport Wagon or the Mercury Capri look more like your Scimitar.
AMC had it's own little niche following, but, like Chrysler of today.......they could never seem to get out of their own way and improve upon their own glaring weaknesses. That's why they went bust.......and why Chrysler has been the bottom of the 'Big 3' for all these many years.
If you look at the Gremlin or Pacer back then......they're pretty much the same sorta layout design as the Japanese hatchbacks that would soon thereafter take over the US marketplace........ only Honda and Toyota were much more reliable and better on gas.

Except for the crappy names AMC put on their cars, they had the best inline 6 cylinder engine in the business. The only 6 cyl with 7 main bearings instead of 5. The body disintegrated, but you couldn't wear the engines.
