Did you, well leave it alone, there's a good lad. I looked up spotted dick. It's made with lard. Lard makes everything delicious. But unfortunately it's terribly unhealthy. So I'm guessing spotted dick tastes rather good despite the name.
We used to get a range of sponge puddings at school, probably because they are cheap and easy to make. They all tasted good and custard added to that. I looked up dick (ooh, madame) and it's old British slang for pudding, so whenever that term was around must have been when this dish came about.

Bread and drippingBread and dripping is a time honored British favorite that makes the most of tasty meat drippings coupled with chunks of crusty bread. Sometimes referred to as a mucky sandwich, it once enjoyed a great deal of popularity in local pubs as well as in the home. Had it all the time in the 60's, loads of salt on top.

Urgh! The whole point of dripping is that it’s the fat, oils and juices which drip from the beef as it’s being roasted so even though you’re clogging up your arteries with deadly fat it’s full of freshly cooked beef flavours with crispy bits to add some texture. The stuff in that jar looks bland. Fried bread is another thing I’ve long since stopped eating but I’ll probably ask for both items just before I die.

Different eras. My Dad used to save the goose dripping from the tray and spread it on toast.

Different eras. My Dad used to save the goose dripping from the tray and spread it on toast. A few months ago I saw pork belly at the supermarket. So I bought it. It was pure fat but I baked it and it was delicious. I'll never do it again because I'm a bit of a healthnut. But damn it was good.

Pork belly - if you cook that fat properly - derrrrrrr-licious.

I used to love steak and kidney pie when I was younger but have gone off offal. Cornish pasties are good if rather bland. They‘re like having a small meal encased in pastry. But I’m not a foodie. [img class="smile" alt=" " src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/diXlAGTvmKSUbEqRyond.gif"] Everyone likes food.
What is a "fish and finger" pie, while we're at it?
FFS, all of their food names are just sex puns. It’s like a bawdy British sit-com. Those idiots can’t take anything seriously.

No such thing. You're too late. Stammaman already answered the question:

Well I was really looking for the origin of the term. It's odd to us colonials.
