For the Tower of London to be built he ruled from here. Not the church in the background, I mean the building in the foreground that’s no longer there. It’s the site of Barking Abbey and, although it had a long and impressive history, it was demolished during Henry the 8th’s anti-Catholic rampage.

I can never get used to the idea of a monastery being full of nuns.
To be fair, during Henry VIII's reign, everybody was on an anti monastery rampage, particularly the Catholic Church.

The wiki page is worth a read. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barking_AbbeyI often see Eastern Europeans drinking beer amongst the stones and the church was in the news a couple of years back after serial killer Stephen Port dumped a couple of bodies in the graveyard.

I've been to the Tower of London. I stayed at a hotel just east of it, overlooking the Tower bridge. I saw the crown jewels, and I've had people not believe me when I tell them I saw the Queen's crown in person.
William truly was a bastard though, a murderous terrorist who robbed the English people.

That one huge diamond will knock your eyes out. I think that's the Imperial State Crown, the one she wears at most state functions. It's quite impressive.

It’s been decades since I last visited the tower but it is an impressive building. Barking Abbey nowadays is just a series of bricks marking out the site but there is a lovely tower that’s been restored.
