And religious. But in an era when husbands routinely drank the Friday's wages up before he got home, then hit the wife when she asks how will we pay the rent, the temperance movement, though ill thought out, was a means to make their Menfolk behave better, and you gay men were no help, by the way. By the 1920s, women working in the factories and shops learned they could survive on their own. Why, what did gay men do or not do? Most of us married women back in those days and lived the lie. I'm just fooling with you. I think any American would've gotten my joke.

Does anyone understand what I mean? This is pretty cool, like stepping into a time machine. You can tell who the peasants were in this. The fine folk were the ones with the horseless carriages Im convinced humanity is heading towards an eventual cyberpunk dystopia that's if we dont nuke ourselves into oblivion before then

They were probably also getting drunk.

Did they though? It became an obstacle and still is. I believe the start of the 20th century was ruined by the patriarchal ruling class and royals of the era with the advent of WWI, which was devised to keep the peasants from revolting against the status quo of the era.
And heaven forbid, women might vote and usurp conservative power. The western patriarchal ruling class is based on the premise women have absolutely nothing to say because the Bible instructed women to silently obey their husbands and fathers before them. Women due to being daughters of Eve are inherent corrupters of men, far less intelligent and too emotional. This is not a knock at men, those folks didn't know any better. Even so, for most of Western history, we didn't achieve half the progress we could have. It was also deliberate.

The century appeared to start out with huge promise, like a renaissance period, and then it morphed into something hideous and ugly.

Not to mention gay men were more oppressed than women. Women were at least accepted for being female. The gay man wasn't accepted as being a "real" man.
