Never watched it at all back in the day.
Bought the whole series on DVD and watched the first 8 episodes in 2 days.
Great nostalgia generator, and so far much better than lots of the shit they put out these days.

Was the first serious TV alongside Lou Grant. You can see the effect it had on the Golden age of TV and shows like The Wire and such like. Great characters too. Belker and Howard were probably my favourites.

Howard Hunter reminds me of Dwight Schrute. I also got the entire series of 'Barny Miller' and will be watching that soon.

I brought the first two seasons of Barney Miller on DVD as I loved it when it came out, never seen newer seasons for sale. Thing that surprised me watching it now is how issues like wife beating are seen as completely natural and pretty much ok. Certainly wouldn't pass muster nowdays.

Isn't that a medical drama? not a fan of them. Only ever liked Nurse Jackie.

Isn't that a medical drama? not a fan of them. Only ever liked Nurse Jackie. It could be Nurse Jackie's long-lost father, gritty for its kind. I just found this on Wikipedia: 😆 I'm a television baby; taglines wove into my brain, so you say Hill Street Blues and I say St. Elsewhere. 📺

I'll look into it. I still have to finish off 'Magnum PI' and 'Streets of San Francisco'.. I got sidetracked with Hill Street Blues. Last few years I also watched the entire series of 'Matlock', 'Murder She Wrote' and 'Rockford Files'. Rockford Files was a lot of fun.

I loved Magnum PI; I think it was oddly kid friendly -- no real violence or sex. Those shows all have a lot of episodes per season, right? I bet the episodes are a good deal longer than now, too; today's TV hours are 40-42 minutes, subtracting for commercials. Is Matlock Andy Griffith as a trial attorney? He always seemed so calm and pleasant, in the ads if I'm thinking of the right show.

It was like a murder mystery format, but there was usually a murder than someone getting framed. A couple of times he finds out the person he's defending is really guilty. Picture quality was a bit poor for some early episodes. It's amazing how great some older shows look, 'Streets of San Francisco' looks really clean even though it's older than Matlock (that one dude sure had a massive nose!), and Murder She Wrote had good picture quality all the way through. Oh yeah, I looked up St Elsewhere and it looks right up my alley. Lots of famous guest stars and some of the regulars had long careers afterwards too. Sadly, they're not selling the complete series on Amazon.

Sadly, they're not selling the complete series on Amazon. LOL. I don't know 'Streets of San Francisco'. Poor Angela Lansbury; of course only her show would have good video definition. We got a lot of Paul McCartney lookalike jokes out of the deal. I remember Mark Harmon and Denzel Washington were stars of St. Elsewhere in the later seasons. William Daniels, who voiced KITT in Knight Rider, was a senior doctor. Alfre Woodard was a doctor, David Morse and Ed Begley Jr. More than a few Emmy winners. Maybe more seasons will become available at some point. Did you watch Crime Story? So cool, it opened to Del Shannon's Runaway. Dennis Farina starred as a Chicago (I think) cop in the 50s. It didn't run for long. Michael Mann made it around the same time that he made Miami Vice. China Beach was great. Dana Delaney starred. 🥰 I had a girl crush on her. 30Something was actually really good, and Golden Girls. I watched all grown up shows. Only rules were: No Flintstones, no Three's Company, no Charlie's Angels and no Fantasy Island because they were too stupid and would dumb me down for watching.

Streets of San Francisco was Michael Douglas's first big role. It was him and Karl Malden for the first 4 seasons. I had heard of the detective 'Sam Stone' before I knew where it was from. Yes, Angela Lansbury wasn't that hot, but there was at least one hot lady in most Murder She Wrote episodes, LOL. Never watched Crime Story, but looking it up it seems like it might be cool. China Beach seems interesting too, looks like M.A.S.H. in Vietnam. I admit, I have a soft spot for Threes Company, especially when Don Knotts was on it.

I watched it back in the day and liked it. It was one of the first ensemble cop shows that deals the issues cops face in their jobs and life. Plus it was edgy, though very mild by today’s standards, pushing more violence and sexuality on network TV.

Belker and Howard were probably my favourites. Absolutely not. The most popular shows were more lightweight, but some of the best TV was during the 1950s and 1960s were teleplays like Marty, Twelve Angry Men, Requiem for a Heavyweight. There was Hitchcock’s series, The Twilight Zone. There were several hardboiled cop shows like Lee Marvin’s M-Squad, The Untouchables, etc.

should also remember that the first season of Starsky And Hutch was good gritty TV before they changed it into a more lightweight bromance. think it was based on the "Super Cops" book and film.
