I forgot what team you support yggdrasil. West Ham is a supposed rival to what team? It is a rival to all Premier League teams right? Some more than others. Admin- I have no connection with the team. I played soccer (football) in my youth. Many years ago when the Premier League started I decided to choose a favorite team. I chose West Ham. I am not really a "supporter" I reckon. It is just the team I selected as my favorite Premier League team. The explanation why would require writing a long and boring post. Several reasons. An English expat friend of mine was a West Ham supporter. That was one reason. I won't bore you with all the details. Understand that - when I was a boy, I supported Tottenham Hotspur (this is a team at the other end of the country to where I grew up). The reason? The boy next door supported them. Then you were an idiot. You support your local team. Community pride is everything, even if you are from Newcastle.

The Newcastle 'community' could get stuffed because they rejected me.

Did you lust for squash courts and avocado based food?

A person has no control over where he/she is born and reared. There does seem to be tribal soccer (football) neighborhood fans in England. There is a pretty good movie about this- www.imdb.com/title/tt0385002/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0Have you seen Green Street Hooligans? Was it realistic? If you haven't seen this film never mind. What if your family moves from Newcastle to Liverpool (or London or wherever) when you are 11 years old? Do you support Liverpool?

Football is tradition, you are bought up being taken to your local side and you support them too and generations go on. I am third generation Millwall my Son is fourth. What if you move? You don't change teams, that would be harder than changing wives FFS. You go to away games near you and go back home whenever you can. Football fans sneer at those who chose to support a big team far away (like those in London who support Man U, real United supporters wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, just a bunch of glory hunters unless they were born Mancs.) Difference between hard core fans and "arm chair fans" basically. No, I avoid hooligan films, they are largely nonsense aimed at morons, the reality is way in the past and not something to glorify. If you are 11 years old when you moved, you would already support Newcastle, no one who ever supports a side and just changes on a whim is a real fan. I would imagine all this should be the same with US sports unless you are a very fickle bunch. Your side is for life, not just for Xmas.

Pretty much the same in Australia, although the football codes are different. I support Parramatta rugby league because I grew up there. But Rugby league is only popular in New South Wales and Queensland (and northern England). The rest of Australia supports Australian Rules football. They regularly get 50,000-80,000 to weekly games.
