great game, up there with the best world cups ever, pity it had to be in Qatar. Great way for Messi to go out and Mbappe is going to be a giant. I agree! I had low expectations for this World Cup due to the location. Qatar? I wondered how they could build a field and pitch in that environment. It turned out to be a Herculean task but they got the job done. Excellent matches. The final was epic.

So an American nation wins. I hope our US people feel some pride about that. :) I could be wrong, but I think the Argentine team is more European than the French team. If you mean where they play their football, there's only one American player who plays in the US too. They all play in Europe, impossible to get to the top of the game playing in American League.

Their motive was a characteristically Arab ostentation (just look at the current race to achieve the tallest buildings in the world). They crave recognition and are in a constant oneupmanship with their regional counterparts. Along with the prestige, they probably also thought it would usher in a lucrative tourism market for the long term. But did it really achieve these goals? They got nothing but bad press in the twelve years leading up to the event. Then they hardly proved themselves to be a desirable, open tourist destination with their last minute alcohol restrictions and their unrepentant inflexibility regarding the LGBT community. Then there’s the fact that their team performed worse than any other host in history. Add the fake fans and inability to host all the fans in overnight accommodation and I doubt that they achieved much at all. Yeah the play on the field ran smoothly but was it all worth the enormous financial cost and frequent scandal? I bet that the UAE and Saudis were laughing their asses off at Doha and the al-Thani regime.

All of the negative things you mentioned are subjective - Saudi and the UEA couldn't care less about those. They will be jealous because hosting the World Cup was a massive scoop for Qatar and something they'll brag about in the regions for decades.

Qatar can afford it with their massive oil revenues. What was hurting them was the Saudi and UAE sanctions supposedly due to Qatars support of Iran. They fairly successfully stomped on human rights protests and the highly successful World Cup was a huge diplomatic success.
