ayatollah , Prince Myshkin , Just so you know, there is a religious schism when it comes to adding ham or any kind of meat to the salad. For my side it's pure heresy. My mother is of German/Dutch ancestry. She made a mean potato salad. No meat of course! The secret ingredient is ... {Spoiler} add a little sweet pickle juice.

How were things like kosher diets in the USSR, would the government recognize and make accomodations in it's facilities or were you completely on your own to obtaining kosher foods? No idea. I didn't know and didn't care. Not that I care now...

I didn't know and didn't care. Not that I care now... I was watching one video of an ex-pat saying you pretty much had to get in line at the grocery every day because they'd run out of everything, you couldn't count on an item ever being in stock.

Kinda like here during the beginning of the pandemic. I couldn't find peanut butter for weeks.

It was worse than that. The economy was not consumer oriented. It was paperwork oriented. The shop needed to fulfill their monthly quotas and fruits - especially exotic fruits - gave more points. So you could come to your neighborhood shop and there would only be mangos and some rotten cabbage. That's what socialism truly is.
