In the US, you have stores, not shops.
So why do you have shoplifters?
Surely they should be storelifters.

Stores and shops are the same thing. Store is more common to say in the USA, but shop is used as well.

America's left hand doesn't know what its right hand is doing.

Shoplifting began in ancient Phonecia. Thieves would literally lift the corner of a shop in order to snatch the sweet, sweet olives within.

Shoplifting is also an action carried out by some for the cheap thrill of the possibility of getting caught. A way of seeking manufactured danger for the adrenaline rush in a society where everything has just about been made too safe. And so there are those who steal and do computer hacking (another form of theft or vandalism) because of boredom not because they are needy or are in need of what they stole.

Or as it is referred to in the industry as "Grazing". Because it is harder to get caught if you have already eaten or drank the item right there in the store because security cameras have blind spots, and if you bring your "Flock" with you (a crowd of people who are in on it and are also there to steal) it makes the theft that much harder to prove and security personnel disguised as other shoppers can't sneak up on you. And it helps if you carry a small magnet with you to disable security tags that are often hidden in packaging, for non-edible items. The rest is just tightly integrated cooperation and choreography. Not that I am condoning shoplifting, but just giving an outline of how it is done. As anything that is not done well probably shouldn't be done at all.

I have learned since I posted on this thread that the term shoplifter came from thieves actually lifting the side of the shop and reaching in and stealing merchandise. So, I understand now where the term comes from.

We shop in stores. Shop is generally a verb here. So how can you lift a verb? You can only lift a noun, therefore storelifting would make sense.

Just sort of like the "lifting" being a supporting adjective or maybe an adverb to the verb. I don't know, I was obviously very drunk when I made that post about "shoplifting" being a type of shopping, the kind where the customer doesn't pay, and I am even drunker now. Just about totally wasted...

I’ve seen some videos where young women get caught shoplifting and have to give the shopkeeper a blowjob.
