Canberra and Brisbane the NrL winners, Brisbane also won in the AFL.
The Raiders and Bulldogs put on a really entertaining display, albeit one peppered with a few refereeing errors, but The Green Machine held on in the end 34-30.
Manly had a bit of shocker against the Broncos - far too many handling errors to Mount any sort of challenge. Brisbane were good, but nowhere near as clinical as they could be.
In Melbourne - The Lions overran the Blues to win by 26, 100-74, their 5th straight to see both Brisbane clubs on top of their respective competitions.
As a side note - I dont know the meaning behind it - but Carlton should never again have orange trims on their jerseys, and the old Fitzroy style kits Brisbane wear in Melbourne need to be retired. The darker maroon looks better with the blue and gold trim….

I've seen teams dominate territory and possession more than Manly in the second half last night and get less from it, but not many. There was a Sunday afternoon game in 1998 where Parramatta had 65-70% possession, nearly all of it in Canberra's half, but lost 22-8 after conceding 3 tries in the ge 5 minutes leading up to half time.
Carlton are a sloppy football team. They conceded so many goals last night from traps Brisbane didn't set for them. Saad kicking to two Carlton players on the wing only to see them turn a 2 on none into a turnover which led directly to a goal really summed up their night. Vossy at a crossroads. He needs a final appearance and probably a first week win or his second tenure as a senior coach will be shorter than his first.

Penrith toughed out a difficult win 18-6 over the Warriors, the Dolphins thrashed the Sharks and Souths had an impressive, comfortable, win over Melbourne in the magic round.
In the AFL the Crows hung tough with Geelong for most of the game but were overwhelmed near the end. Richmond pulled away from West Coast in the 3rd quarter. Melbourne were very lucky to hold on against the Suns at Carrara, winning by 5 points. Fremantle got much needed big win over Hawthorn and the Bulldogs defeated GWS by 15 points in a typically spiteful Clash of the Bogans.

Bob’s Tigers beat Hosko’s Dragons in a really entertaining clash 18-16. Dragons nearly pull the win out of the fire at the end, with a shit pass and a shinned kick putting Ben Hunt into the backfield, but a lack of support and a couple of wrong options later and the Tigers scrambled a tackle with the winning try about 20cm above the try line.
Cowboys upset a very poor Roosters 20-6, with the chooks scoring in the final minutes to flatter the score line. People suggesting the Sualii is in line for a NSW jersey are kidding themselves. Very quiet. Teddy tried hard, but their whole attack looked clunky and uninspiring TBH. The Cows were really up for this one, and looked much better in defence than at any time this season.
In the late game - Titans held off an inspired Dylan Brown and the Eels 26-24 in a high quality game with some really awesome tries scored in the greasy conditions. Mitch Moses went off for a concussion, and will now be stood down for 11 days meaning he misses next week against the Raiders in Canberra (which could well be snow bound)

In the AFL - Port beat Dons by 5, Saints over North by 30 and a sweet and sour day for Hosko with the Pies beating the Swans by 29….

Collingwood have started nicely, but plenty of reasons for caution. The Cats looking like world beaters not the least of them. That Saints/ North game is a contender for the worst game this century.
Good to see the Titans win. Will they finally finish with a record that does their list justice?
In many ways I've gotten what I wanted from the Dragons. No blow-outs. They're keeping themselves in games. The down side being they're not even looking like winning them.

Bloody hell, what a smashing out at Penrith! For mine the Panthers are still the team to beat this year with Souths the team most likely. Warriors beat the Canterbury Non-Entities pretty comfortably, establishing a big lead early and winning by 12.
Richmond beat a Danger-less Geelong by 4 goals. Gold Coast continued a very solid 2 months of footy thrashing West Coast in Perth. No sympathy for the Eagles: it was obvious by the end of 2020 that their golden run was over but they refused to rebuild. They'd better hurry up as most of the early picks will be going to Tassie from 2025 onwards.

Well, that was a complete atrocity. I'd say someone gad to win the abomination that was the Cowboys/ Dragons travesty on Saturday but the Cowboys won by 20 points. Both teams played like Jersey Flegg sides. Diabolical.
Souths/ Wests was basically a 1-0 soccer game where the leading team scored from a penalty 5 minutes in and tbe trailing team tries hard without every really getting a shot on target. It then blew out to a 3-0 game in stoppage time.
Canberra have very quietly gone on an impressive 5 game run. Good win over Eels last night.
AFL had 5 real nothing games. Carlton apparently hit the front in the last quarter but when I turned off they'd managed 1 goal for the game well into the 3rd quarter. They lost to the Bulldogs by 20. Swans lost by 17 to Fremantle but scored thrice in the last minute to get that close. The other 3 were mismatches on paper and also in practice.

Pretty ordinary Saturday of football all round.
I went to Accor to watch the Tigers / Souths game. Pretty dull affair with even the Souths fans subdued. I have to say though, despite losing by 20 the Tigers defended very well for the majority of that game, both first up and scrambling. The attack - a bit of a mystery why they kept trying to score tries against arguably the best defensive centre in the game in Campbell Graham.
Dragons were poor against the Cowboys, likewise the Eels.

And the Sunday games weren't great either. Manly v Cronulla easily the game of the round and it was just a solid game with Manly getting within a converted try with a late score.
Titans: WTF are they doing? They should not still be this inconsistent. Home or away, losing to Newcastle with their talent is ridiculous. And they've dropped out of the 8 as a result.
Collingwood thrashed GWS. Adelaide hosting St Kilda was a big game on paper, but neither team were interested in that. Crows were switched on, Saints were flat and the margin was 52 points. Crows leap frogged the Blues into 8th with the win.

Griffon sacked. Front runners are all former Dragons. What a fucking surprise. Always the same "we need someone who bleeds the big Red V." a) "the Big Red v" has won 1 premiership in 44 years and that was with a coach who imported a winning culture from another club. And b) our board has no idea how to run a football club and will self-sabotage anyway.

Port come from 3 goals down to beat Melbourne in a Friday Night Classic. Parramatta stunned South Sydney with a big 36-12 win. And St George and the Roosters have an all time stinker which somehow managed to have two of the great tries in the last 2 minutes abd deliver a finish we'll not easily forget.

Bizarre finish to North v Sydney. Swans were given a free kick in the goal square in the last minute. No one in the crowd knew why so they pelted the ground with garbage and booed the umpires off the field. High class from North fans as usual.
Turns out North were penalised for making their 76th substitution. The rules mandate only 75 being allowed in a game.
Cue calls for an NFL-style umpire head piece so they can explain the rulings (which would be completely unworkable).

Sharks punish a wayward and error riddled Knights 26-6.
Doggies beat Adelaide in the AFL by 7 goals.
Halftime at Leichhardt - and my decision to not jinx my Tigers with my attendance is paying off, with the home side leading the Cowboys 24-6.
And approaching 3/4 time in the west, Freo up by 22 on the Cats…
