I've been giving this some serious thought and I've expanded my own list of favourites through listening, a list which does exhibit how I could use some recommendations for more recent country albums. My sister gave me an appreciation of Miranda Lambert who she's a fan of. But growing up, I heard a lot of what you might call old school country music courtesy of my mother. So, my list of favourites is stacked with older albums and my favourite period for studio albums is from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, at which point country became a slicker, more commercialised enterprise as reflected by the form, one that would lead to the emergence of pop country which conquered America.
"You know, there's really only three female singers in the world; Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, and Connie Smith. The rest of us are only pretending."
- Dolly Parton in light-hearted conversation with Fred Foster
“If you’re talking about a country singer, there ain’t nobody better.”
- Merle Haggard on Connie Smith
Connie Smith
I think the country album as an artform developed in the 1950s alongside similar advancements in folk and jazz. New recording techniques were introduced and musicians who'd previously been served best by the singles format moved from song compilations to concentrating on creating studio works. Then the country concept album arrived and proved to be a gamechanger.
'Marie' - Jim Reeves (a track taken from Reeves' 1958 concept album 'Girls I Have Known', my favourite of his albums, produced by Chet Atkins)
I'm a city boy who knows nothing about the country, or country living ... I just love that country sound ...
