I hate to give one to the Nazis but I think Rommel was a better general in terms of tactics and strategy.

Was Patton's "accident" orchestrated?

Was Patton's "accident" orchestrated? I don't know, but I wouldn't rule it out. He shot his mouth off quite a few times, maybe one time too many.

Indeed, it was suspicious. The death of General Sikorski was suspicious too. I think both could very well have been assassinations, but we'll probably never know for sure.

The only thing I can say against Rommel is: I don't think he should have exceeded his orders by crossing the border into Egypt. IIRC he had three reasonably good German divisions and ten Italian divisions of varying quality. I think he should have chased the Brits out of Libya and then dug in for a defense.
If Patton and Rommel had fought, I think Patton would have won, but not because he was a better general. Patton never had supply problems anything as bad as what Rommel had.

Patton
When he wasn't in the Desert (Italy, Normandy), Rommel wasn't all that. Patton, despite being a royal pain in the ass, was superior. His moves during the Battle of the Bulge was one on the most brilliant in WWII. He correctly assessed what was happening, how big it was and started moving his 3rd Army units, which were in battle, to shift to attack the south side of the Bulge. Bradley sat with his thumb up his ass while Patton saved the day.

I get it now - so the general board is for posting about generals. Not quite.
By June 1942 Rommel was a Field Marshal
That said, if you are really interested in such matters, General Slim, of whom it was said that he was a modest man with very little to be modest about, held, by 1944, the official rank of colonel with a war-time rank of major-general and the temporary rank of lieutenant-general.
