I sing Midnight Special but I don't feel the need to put on blackface and to try and look and sound like Leadbelly if I do it in public. No, that is dressing up in drag. Al Jolson was popular during the 1920s…the same era the Klan reappeared…and came from an entertainment tradition that regularly infantilized and denigrated African Americans. And Jolson is dead, so he doesn’t need a pass. And no, this does not excuse a minister of a God who tells his disciples pointblank to not ridicule each other. |
