I remember my sister having them and nearly breaking my wrist when I had a go, although hers were solid and like giant marbles, bloody painful. Must have been about 1975 ish? About right, time-wise. I recall the big department stores all having them in their knick-knack and 'adult toy' areas, but they were much more a kid thing. The ones I recall best were made, I think, of some lucite type plastic, heavy but not as much so as the ones your sis had. They called them 'clackers' over here. Maybe they could have actually shattered on hard enough impact, but I think the whole story was imaginary. I can imagine some kid bopping himself or a playmate a good one in the head with them, though. Yes, they were called clackers here too. they all ended up twisted around phone lines!

"It's always funny 'til someone loses an eye." I got the cane from him once for throwing a paper plane out of a 3rd floor window into an empty yard. Apparently I could have taken someone’s eye out. Ah, the "cane" another good old nostalgic punishment, imagine trying to cane a kid now, they'd lock the teacher up. Once was enough for me. Mine was for playing poker for money in class.

LOL, over here there was a thing a few years back with kids tossing their sneakers up into phone lines, thus giving one the unique sight of pairs of shoes dangling overhead as one walked down the street. Did that ever catch on in the UK?

We had canes for the hand and slippers for the bum.

I got “the belt” over 300 times one school year. We had a competition to see who could get it the most.
That’s about 50 of six of the best.
