A few of us in this neck of the woods could see Fiji beating Australia happening. It isn’t as big an upset as many might think.
Australian Rugby Union is dying, and if the taps of talent from the pacific keep getting closed, they are in real trouble.

And there's still eternal optimists who hope for results like this and Australia missing the Quarters in the vain hope that those running the game will realise what has been evident to the rest of us for years: that Rugby is dying in this country and needs to completely change things from the top down.

It’s funny - I was literally talking a relative about an hour ago who isn’t really keen on sport at all, but knows enough to make small talk. He mentioned that the Wallabies lost , and said they should ‘get some more of those Penrith boys in the team. They win a lot’…..

Penrith play a different code of Rugby?

Yep, that's the joke. Penrith Panthers are a Rugby League team who've won the last 2 premierships abd in line to win a third in the next couple of weeks. Rugby Union is a very different sport. League has a cap on possession whereby there's a change over every 6 tackles, places little emphasis on scrums and has a different scoring system. Union you can have as many tackles as you want providing you don't turn the ball over. Rugby League also has more emphasis on moving the ball after a tackle is completed. There was a time, not even 30 years ago when everyone who followed League had at least some idea what was going on in Union. Not any more.

And the World Cup is Union, like the one Matt Damon won for Morgan Freeman? Is there a Rugby League World Cup?

Rugby Union is the one with a World Cup that matters and yes, that is the one from Invictus. Rugby League has a World Cup, but there's only 3 teams with a realistic chance of winning it: Australia, NZ and England, and usually neither NZ nor England are any match for Australia. To hammer this home: Australia has won 9 of the last 10 WCs, with NZ's most recent win coming 4 tournaments ago in 2008. Great Britain won their most recent in 1972, and has competed as individual nations (England, Wales, Scotland) since 1995. Though I was just looking at the records and Wales competed as a nation in 1975 so I might have my wires crossed.

Nice read. A fond memory that I have from the 2016 Rio Olympics was chatting with Fiji fans on the stands at the Rugby Sevens event. Just thinking of them having come all the way from Fiji to see their team play was incredible. I was so glad for them that Fiji ended up winning the gold.

Any signs of increasing interest in RU in Brazil? Three of their neighbours, all football loving countries too, are at this World Cup. Uruguay were beating Italy 17-7 at H/T in Nice this afternoon. Ended up losing 38-17 in the end.

You were ranked higher than Chile at the time of the qualifying tournament: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Rugby_World_Cup_%E2%80%93_Americas_qualification

Some poor kicking from South Africa.
Missed straightforward conversion and penalty.
And in addition Faf missed a couple of long range penalties .. not gimmies admittedly.
