Once again, all you northerners are going to laugh, but I live in New Orleans. And we are not used to this down here. It went down to 19 last night. And it is 10:30 AM and it is only 23 degrees !!!
We are not supposed to go above freezing until this afternoon. And then only for four hours.
Schools are closed. Bridges are closed. Airport is closed.
What is the weather where you live?

Now they are saying that the temperature will not go above freezing today. The governor has declared a state of emergency asking that nobody go to work or school.

The forecast was expecting it to drop to 11 degrees last night, but it actually only dropped to 18 degrees. Eventually it warmed up to 23 degrees by 2:00 PM.
Now it is 36 degrees at 7:00 PM with temperatures expected to be in the low 40's tomorrow. Looks like I will be able to leave the house tomorrow...
Over the past 2 days it was an issue of black ice on the roads, inexperienced drivers playing bumper cars on the highway, and the issue that the plastic gears in the transmission might shatter in temperatures that are below freezing when driving at any speed.

Yeah, I don't know how to deal with black ice. No experience.

Yeah, I don't know how to deal with black ice. No experience. If your car starts to skid then gently take your foot off the excelerator but do not touch the brake. Then gently and slightly turn the steering wheel in the same direction of the skid, just enough to stop skidding. You shouldn't have to turn the steering wheel more than three or four inches. Although this might not work for top heavy vehicles such as minivans or trucks. Obviously that is not a desirable situation to be in, however it is better than wreaking out. There is no guarantee that it will work, but even if it doesn't, if done properly the results will be better than if not used at all. Be mindful that using this technique usually results in changing lanes so be aware of any other vehicles in close proximity or if you are too close to the edge of the road. Use your best judgement in this regard.

And I guess you can add, "Don't put yourself in a situation where you have to stop quickly." As in, don't rush up to stopped traffic, or a stop sign, or a red light, and need to stop suddenly." Because there could be black ice between you and where you will need to stop. Thanks. You seem to know what you are talking about. I assume, in spite of living somewhere that gets snow and ice every year, numbs skulls still don't know how to drive in it and wreck every year.

We had high winds last night, trees down in north London, vehicles over on many roads. Today was blue skies and sunny. Cold, but normal.

High winds? That's interesting. You wouldn't know what the wind speed of those high winds was would you? Up to 83mph in the UK, up to 90 in mainland Europe. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42729662

Global Warming believers say this is a result of Global Warming --- hotter summers, colder winters and more intense storms. They blame everything on global warming. We have had hot summers, cold winters and intense storms throughout history. There is no man made global warming.
