I'm generally not a huge fan, nearly every double album I've listened to (London Calling, Mellon Collie, The Fragile) I think could have been better as a single album (too much filler)

I think they are fine. I don't believe that shortening them would result in a better album though.
Because, take guns n roses second album for example.
They went ahead and shortened it to a single album slightly later on Iirc. And it still had november rain on it. Therefore it still sucks.
I'm saying, the use your illusion double album is a mess of an album. But the single album edit of it is no less crappy. It still has just as much crap on it as the double album did.

Basically another way to look at it, lets say there was a song you didn't like. Hypothetically lets say there was one part of the song you didn't like.
But, it wouldn't be the case where you like one part of a song and not the rest see. Cuz you either like a song or not. With double albums it is the same thing, either you like it or you do not.
It wouldn't make sense to say, well if they cut this part of the song out it would be better. Because if you took one part out of the song there would be no song at all.
With double albums it's the same principle , at least to me.

Rarely work as most are ego driven, the grind after a first album of promotion, tour, album, promotion, tour etc, rarely gives artists the time to make a decent single album, let alone a double. It is usually successful artists who can afford to get off the treadmill that put them out and then they tend to be ego driven affairs and can even help split a band up (Lamb Lies Down). Don't agree on London Calling which is a great 3 sides. The exception to the rule of course are live albums which require the longer format.

'Tusk' is probably Fleetwood Mac's worst recording. It's a testament to Lindsey Buckingham's ego.

Can be a hit or a miss.
Example for an artist I love:
Sign o' the times - Prince Perfect double album, no fillers
Emancipation - Prince triple album, Some good songs, but far too many fillers

The Beatles' White Album and Dylan's Blonde on Blonde are masterpieces. Don't know much about albums later than that. Mostly moved on from pop.

Then there's George Harrison's album, All Things Must Pass, consisting of a lot of works ignored/refused by Lennon and McCartney for inclusion in the Beatles' albums--so many songs that it was a triple album. Arguably the best of the post-Beatles solo albums (with the possible exception of McCartney's Band on the Run), and far superior to Lennon's solo albums.
