But they make pretty damn good rock music. At least they did from the 60s to the 80s.

We wanted them to stay out of it. Why? Because Portugal declaring for the Allies would have forced Spain to declare for Germany. Portugal would have been occupied in days. This would have made access to the Mediterranean almost impossible for the Royal Navy, meaning North Africa would have been indefensible, handing British Middle Eastern oil to the Axis. Portugal was also used as an escape route for refugees.

Didn’t Portugal sit out WWII when the limeys were being bombed like crazy in 1940? Portugal and Spain adhered to the principle of armed neutrality and we sold tungsten to both the Axis and the Allies. Salazar opposed liberalism and while fascist he was very skeptical of what he saw as paganism in Germany. As the war turned against Germany, Portugal eventually let the Allies use the Azores as naval and air bases. The thing is, if Portugal joined the war on the Allies side, Germany would've very likely invaded the Iberian peninsula, the question would've be if Spain would fight alongside Germany or against it because Franco also didn't want to join given that Spain had recently fought the civil war. One of the "biggest what if" IMO was if the Axis took control of Gibraltar and essentially locked the Mediterranean sea. How would that affect the war in North Africa?

I've always enjoyed utterly shameless propaganda, The Green Berets being the gold standard of course, and The Patriot was a pretty decent effort. Don't get me wrong, "The Green Berets" is shameless propaganda, but it is so weird and off-base, it has "The Room" vibes. Almost like a script about kicking the Japanese out of The Philippines in 1944 was recycled with name changes. I'm not very militarily-minded, to say the least, but I believe it's one of the more accurate truisms that wars are often lost because one side is essentially still fighting the last one they were in. I always assumed that the mindset of TGB was rooted in the Korean war, but as you suggest perhaps it is more of a WWII feel. It's been a while since I've seen it.
