I wonder if they are even going to try and explain how/why? Will they be playing their characters from their movies or just the same characters in a new universe?

In all seriousness, I'm not really too beat up about this. If it was a more important character from the DCEU like Gal Gadot staying onboard (as some rumors alleged) then yeah I'd find that jarring.

I'm torn because yeah, it's confusing as shit. That's my initial reaction too.
But Gunn's stuff is legitimately some of the only good DCEU content there was.

I’m hopeful for the new DCUECECEU. I really am. And I don’t really mind this necessarily. But… it will lead a lot of casuals into thinking it’s the same universe. They should’ve made it clear as crystal that the old DCEUEUECCCU is dead completely. And Blue Beetle in particular was a huge flop so keeping that movie as canon/sort of canon is not a smart idea.

I laughed audibly at my desk at that.
I don't disagree with you at all it's confusing as shit, I just happen to think The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are great. I knew the second it was announced Gunn was the new big man on campus he wasn't going to throw away his stuff.

Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto revealed during an interview with Screen Rant that Gunn brought up the upcoming Booster Gold series when discussing Blue Beetle's future in the DCU. "Now, where does it fit, how is it gonna play out? We haven't talked about that. But we both have talked about our interest in continuing Jaime's story, and finding a way for that story to be a part of this new universe," he shared. "Although he had already said that Blue Beetle is the first hero of his universe, it was very reassuring to know that Xolo Maridueña is going to still play Blue Beetle, which means that what we were able to enjoy and absorb in this movie serves as a foundation to the character of Jaime as he embarks into this new world."

However, a few weeks before the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wan reveals that it is highly unlikely that Affleck will appear in the film, and explains why (via Empire) "Probably not. All I'll say is that those scenes were just to have something in the bank in case we needed to explain time continuity if we came out [before The Flash]."

From Xolo Mariduena:
"I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever," said the Cobra Kai actor on the red carpet of the Saturn Awards.
"It’s been really great to work alongside James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with. It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon."
