Yes, I was 6 years old and remember that day very well. My mother was in tears.
Even the wealthy and powerful need to not rock the Establishment boat.

Nixon made sure he wasn't going to lose to another Kennedy. I doubt RFK Sr would have got the nomination in '68 even if Sirhan Sirhan had stayed home. The delegate total on June 5th, 1968
Humphrey - 561 Kennedy - 393 McCarthy - 258
Yes, there was a ton of uncommitted (only 13 states had primaries) but most of them were party lackeys who would have gone or Humphrey. And, if Eugene McCarthy dropped out and pledged his delegated to RFK, it would have given him the lead. But McCarthy HATED Kennedy. "Clean Gene" thought he owned the anti-Vietnam wing and the nomination. Kennedy was a "Bobby Come Lately" who rained on his parade. bobby had his eye on 1972. But Johnson's decision not to run threw him a curve ball. If he had come right out and declared, he would have dominated the anti-war faction and waltzed to the nomination
And the Presidency. Nixon would have been routed.
