Always thought Judy was too "used up" by the time she bagged Esther in A STAR IS BORN to convincingly play a neophyte. Great performance nonetheless. And Mason was a great actor but never number one Hollywood star as he is playing.

And Mason was a great actor but never number one Hollywood star as he is playing. When Norman Maine meets Esther, he's not number one anymore. His star is already in decline, and he is one flop away from being fired.

Sophia Loren in the BRIEF ENCOUNTER remake. She played a CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau)worker. I have had quite a lot to do with several CABx through work and can confirm that nobody looked like Sophia Loren Would you take advice from this woman?

These guys are supposed to be Italian brothers and the red-headed freckled kid is Sinatra's son IMDb trivia "Nearly all of the characters' names were changed from the original play due to the ethnic background of the protagonist (and therefore his family) being shifted from Jewish to Italian to accommodate the casting of Frank Sinatra." "Frank Sinatra and Edward G. Robinson share the twelfth of December as their birthday, with their respective years of birth being 1915 and 1893." <--- 22 year age gap between the brothers

Always thought Judy was too "used up" by the time she bagged Esther in A STAR IS BORN to convincingly play a neophyte. Great performance nonetheless. And Mason was a great actor but never number one Hollywood star as he is playing. The film is at great pains to avoid depicting Esther as a neophyte and establish that she's been around for some years. She tells Norman, "You don't know many years it's taken me to get this far," and her friend Danny reminds her, "It's taken all these years for you to get with a big-name outfit like Glenn Williams." After showing Norman her scrapbook with details of the long road she's traveled, she reiterates, "You see how long it's taken me to get this far."
Janet Gaynor, on the other hand, is depicted as a starry-eyed neophyte fresh off the farm in the earlier version, accentuating the "Cinderella" aspects that Moss Hart tossed out when adapting and updating the Parker/Campbell/Carson screenplay. Interesting tidbit: Gaynor was 30 and Garland was 31 when production began on their respective versions.

I found that Cliff Robertson was miscast in De Palma's Obsession. He came over as arrogant und unlikeable. And, most damagingly of all, not obsessed!
