It is to put the area into perspective. If education insults you, then good. People do exactly the same thing here in the UK to give perspective, the news outlets often refer to it as an area the size of the Isle Of Wight. Obviously when you are reporting on a huge population being displaced then the area those people are in is important to understand the logistics involved and whether it's even possible to do within a given time frame. Most Americans can’t even name all fifty-seven states.

I can’t name all 100 North Carolina counties either, but I was a National Geographic kid, so I’ve always been into maps.
