3. Why (1970)

The correspondence between Ono’s early-70s albums and the contemporary experiments of Krautrock is fascinating: there’s a distinctly motorik cast to Why’s hypnotic rhythm (albeit with a very Ringo-ish tone). Meanwhile, everything about it, from the way it suddenly lurches into life, apparently midway through, to Ono’s throat-shredding vocal, is thrillingly confrontational.
