I live in the real world, and here Hagee slavishly supports everything Israel does. His belief Jews will accept the Messiah or something bad is going to happen to them is like me telling my kids if they don't believe in Santa they won't get a present therefore I'm anti-children. Paul got it right. Hagee's sort aren't pro-Jewish--they thoroughgoingly accept the notion that the Jews murdered their Lord--but they aren't going to flaunt this conviction outside the walls of their churches. In the real world they are the nastiest sort of pragmatists: willing to make common cause with even those whom they feel are the agents of Satan Himself, just so long as it leads to a furtherance of what they see as their divine mission to usher in the Rapture, with Israel as a sort of present-day Jesus theme park and latter-day staging ground for the faceoff of Gog and Magog. The extremely cynical Israeli political hard right is perfectly okey-dokey with this, because those US fundies have a way of managing to get a lot of filthy lucre steered into Israeli defense coffers, due to their all too cozy relationship with the American neocon/hard-right politicians. In their view, everybody wins; Israel gets ongoing monies and blanket protection of US military might (as well as a blind eye to their treatment of their indigenes, the Palestinians), and they get to set the stage for Jesus' big comeback. The only losers in this whore's game of strange bedfellows are those who, in the fundies view, are damned anyway so it makes no nevermind what happens to them in the here and now or afterward. They start 'em out young, sort of like Marjoe Gortner. Hagee's probably been doing this rap since he was a tyke and he's 83...so he's had quite the span to perfect his schtick. Looking up his bio just now, I did read that he supported arch-redneck George Wallace, and started a movement called 'Wallace Youth' back in 1968. So at least he's been consistent in his trajectory of skankiness down the years. |
