Most were cool. They looked and acted like women. And remember, this was jail, so they couldn't wear make-up and wigs and women's clothes. They taped their genitals inside their thighs. Even in the shower you never saw their male junk. And I talked with some of them about whether they wanted their balls cut off. Most didn't.
But yeah, it's a mental illness and has nothing to do with being gay.

Fierstein was hit with the ugly stick quite a few times, but he has a radiant personality. It didn't seem quite feasible that 2 nice looking young men would want to hook up with him. That bit was a bit of wish fulfillment.
I'd say those Trans you associated with, (and putting them in jail for hooking is absurd and vice only causes more problems in society), were still gay men if they accepted their male biology and didn't find it icky. They just liked to look fabulous.
Do they still have a Vice Squad? I watched Vice Squad - '82 last week. Have seen several times before. What a terrific and gritty early 80's B movie street life thriller. Plenty of dynamic and energy with excellent performances. It even makes a point that it is all futile with the cops vs the hookers. Operating from the same toilet. Ramrod the pimp psycho is terrifying. I like Angel - '83 too.
