THE PROMISED LAND (2023). My Rating: 10 out of 10. Who says they don't still make 'em like they used to? This searing, emotionally potent and superbly acted Danish film is both intimate and epic and makes for riveting, moving and intense cinema for adults. It's unmissable and most Highly Recommended, and it comes with an ending which will knock your socks off. Ironically, this brilliant, superbly photographed film may miss out on a much deserved Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film because the cast is "not diverse enough". Interestingly, the film - which The Hollywood Reporter called "a gripping Nordic western", "does have a big plotline about a girl of color who is being subjected to racism. The writer-director Nikolaj Arcel (who also gave us the Academy Award nominated A Royal Affair) noted to the press that he wanted his film to be historically accurate and pointed out that this dark skinned gypsy girl was almost certainly the only person of color in the entire country of Denmark in the 1750s. The great Danish actor Mads Mikkelson serves up one of the best performances of his distinguished career and is unforgettable as "Ludvig Kahlen who pursued his lifelong dream: To make the heath bring him wealth and honor". Mikkelsen, whose range seems limitless, absolutely smolders in the role. What an actor.

Pass for me. It’s in some other language than English. 😞 Okay Casey, allow me to recommend another high quality film for you that is in English. Why don't you step out of your comfort zone and watch the brilliant English language American film THE HOLDOVERS (2023), a potent comedy-drama starring Paul Giamatti and directed by Alexander Payne - who also made the masterful comedy classic SIDEWAYS. It starts off really funny, but then it gets more dramatic and ends being extremely moving, thought provoking and strangely inspiring. It's about three very sad people who get stuck together for the Christmas holidays at an Elitist boarding school. The HOLDOVERS made me both laugh and cry, and I felt real good after I finished.

That’s historically impossible to determine.

If I may, I just want to make it abundantly clear that THE PROMISED LAND is - by * a consensus of one, a far better, more involving and emotionally charged film than BARBIE. Of course, The Promised Land is aimed at intelligent, sophisticated, historically literate adults, rather than anybody who ever played with barbie dolls when they were kids. Which is not to say I didn't find the BARBIE movie interesting and quite enjoyable, I just didn't find it emotionally involving or exciting, it lacked the vigor and passion of The Promised Land. * imdb1.freeforums.net/thread/48665/board-consensus-on-barbie

I appreciate the tag and all. But I guess I'm too tired from having to work longer hours. I just see two threads dedicated to particular movie tastes. Flew over my head that one was intended to parody. After all, I did like Universal Soldier....Definitely better than Timecop.

How about comment comment on my heartfelt observations, I could care less about jean Claude Van Fucking Damme, he's so fucking yesterday dude; and too fucking old to make B-movies anymore. So how about stepping out of your comfort zone and commenting on the content of the thread.

I'm a movie buff so I have a range that extends to classical, comedy, action, drama, and sci-fi. When time permits, I will see what I can do. Perhaps this could be a suggestion for the next movie night.

You need to be productive the next day.
