Still, I think the point you might be missing from your own link is the "stir" over being asked. Asking your sexual orientation on an application is a huge red flag. It's not pertinent to any job. No one needs to know.

For those who think this is a joke or a hoax: so i guess it CAN be asked as long as a "i don't want to answer" is allowed. i mean when my kid filled out his application to open a checking account they did ask that stuff too...for whatever reason.

All job applications ask if the applicant is male or female and single, married, widowed, or divorced. In particular, why does an employer need to know your marital status? For Tax reasons, because the government wants to know so that you can be properly taxed. As well as the government just wanting to double check to see if you lied on your census form. But not before they hire you.

I daresay that’s what the red asterisk is telling the applicant. And don’t think these questions can’t be counter to diversity in that, they are used to weed out “undesirable” job candidates who might be trans or gay. So, a closeted homosexual or transgendered may not want to answer those questions anymore than you do.

I'm working on a job application. Right now as I type this. I begrudgingly selected pronouns from the drop down menu, but when it got to a page asking me if I was straight/heterosexual or LGBTQ+ I selected "prefer not to answer."
What the fuck does this have to do with applying for job? I really don't get why they keep asking this. This has been global. It's insane.
However, I really suggest you should never answer "Prefer not to answer" because that may show for them you are "insecure" or... that you are indeed gay.

Employers can find out anything they want by checking prospective employees' social media accounts that are public, can't they? Wasn't that a thing that was popular with employers when social media came out, and isn't it still today? Way back in the days when all job applications were paper forms that had to be filled out with an ink pen the popular method was to try to contact the school you went to and all previous employers listed. As you should know that system is prone to abuse in that schools and previous employers can and will tell lies about you to keep you from getting hired at your new job. Including the ever popular lie that you still work for your previous employer the motivation is so that the previous employer can still take government credit and collect insurance payments for claiming that you still work there even if you don't. It happens way more often than you think. What about income tax returns and IRS reporting by those companies that could could confirm your employment history? Aren't those part of what determines how much Social Security you are eligible to collect in the future? Maybe they can lie about your performance and your accomplishments, but the government keeps track of tax withholding, for which your paystubs and what your companies report and your income tax returns are proof of employment or nonemployment. Would companies want to take that risk in getting caught in their lies about employment history, which can result in lawsuits?

An applicant’s entire online life can be examined. The way the applicants parks their car can be hiring criteria. Certainly, the names of the applicants can be hiring point. In 2008, I was furloughed from UPS for about six months and was offer a free six weeks with one of the head-hunter agencies generally given to executives departing the company. How I got in it I think was a clerical error. However I took advantage of it and that was an eye-opener for me. I didn’t have to go to the employment office to sign up, they came to us at our business suite and very politely signed us up for the maximum benefits available. Plus, what the instructed us on corporations are looking for in an employee, along with mental health counseling. And coffee and donuts.
