This was a topic discussed on the Judge John Hodgman podcast. Judge John ruled "No." Even though I never gave this major life topic any thought before, I am now ambivalent about the answer. A hot dog is not a sandwich, but is not NOT a sandwich. It is meat and garnish in bread, thus a sandwich, but the universal vision of a sandwich is with two flat slices of bread. I would call a hot dog a quasi-sandwich.
Abd what about the taco?

To further complicate life while avoiding posting my answer to the world shaking inquiry in the OP ... ... these are labelled "roll-up sandwiches"
ambivalent as to whether any type of sausage in a roll is a "sandwich ditto hamburger on a bun !

If going by the design of the bread, neither is the hamburger in a bun a sandwich. A sandwich would be two slices cut from a loaf of bread. Buns are a whole loaf unto themselves.

A footlong with chili, mustard and onions on it, but I like Chicago dogs too.

I would consider a hot dog more of a hero than a sandwich.
But then again, a hero is a sandwich, is it not?
But a hot dog is a hero in a way. It's one of my culinary heroes!
Now tacos are a whole other story. They are in a fishy category all their own.

Strictly culinarily speaking, I prefer hot dogs, although I do kind of like them both equally. Outside of a culinary context, I am not into wieners, either literally or figuratively.
