Hugely popular in the '80s (Porkies, Fast Times, Breakfast Club etc). And in the '90s (Clueless, She's All That, 10 Things I hate... American Pie etc). Then a slew of them in the early 2000s (The New Guy, Bring it On, Mean Girls) then sometime around the mid-noughties, they suddenly just die out.
I was watching 21 Jump Street (pretty funny) and they have this scene. It made me wonder if this is why teen comedies are dying out. Because you can't make fun of people anymore (or treat sex as anything but a VERY serious thing).

They were replaced by a slew of Judd Apatow young adult comedies, which themselves thankfully died out after the 25th iteration.
Right now we are in a comedic desert, unless you count a Will Ferrell return as comedy, which I don't.
