Fun Fact: They have no real defense mechanism. Predators get sick of eating them after a while even if it's an easy snack lol. Sheer numbers.
I guess it's like that with a lot of insects and their broods though

as I've live with tinnitus I welcome the background noise of millions of insects emitting essentially what I've been hearing my entire life I remember in grade school when the entire class would be tested for hearing, you'd put on the earmuffs and listen to the electronic beeps and chirps, on the real high pitched ones I'd say "I hear that all the time" quack bitch school nurse thought I was nuts, I'm glad I barfed on her once I’ve been told I don’t have tinnitus (was tested about 10 years ago), but I have, for many many years now, what I call, a “noisy head”. It was only recently that I was able to explain the sound, a cacophony of crickets, but even that is lacking. It’s not a musical note, and I can’t replicate it. I have to have external sound 24/7, because it’s so overwhelming. I can’t concentrate on anything. Is this what you experience?

I like to drive outside of the city sometimes, drive down country roads, roll down the window and listen the cicadas sing in unison. The Doppler adds to the effect.

I have what I can best describe as when TV stations used to sign out years ago after the national anthem, and you'd hear the test pattern, kind of like that, combined with cicadas, that's the background of my life, and I never knew any different until I had a conversation with my doctor about 15 years ago..... I have a cousin, he's 52 who just was diagnosed with it about a year ago and it's driving him insane

I have a cousin, he's 52 who just was diagnosed with it about a year ago and it's driving him insane OMG, that’s how I used to describe it, too! But again, it wasn’t a true representation, and it wasn’t until late last year that while sitting out on my patio, there was a cacophony (I love that word) of crickets and I was like that better represents it, tho it’s not quite as accurate, either. I always thought everyone has noisy heads. I remember asking my brother, who’s a doctor, if he hears it in his head and he was like wtf? I’ve not known what silence feels like. I can’t say “this is when it first started”, but it’s been going on for decades. Is there anything an ENT doctor can do to at the very least alleviate it? Make it not as loud? It’s ruined me. I can’t concentrate on anything. Forget reading more than a short paragraph. Forget memorizing numbers, comprehending what I’m reading, just having the ability to read anything at all and have it soak in. I’m so glad I found someone with a similar condition! Kindred noisy head spirits, of sorts. I can’t be in total silence, and it’s getting worse as I age. What do they tell you that helps it, if anything?

I've heard there are treatments, I didn't ask my Doctor for any because to me it's like being born deaf or blind, it's just all I know, I don't want to say it doesn't bother me but I'm just used to it. At night I sleep with a great big fan that kind of cancels it out, seems to work okay. My work is fairly noisy, trucks coming and going, mechanics air hammers going off constantly, phones, people having conversation, seems to keep it down for me.

I have had it since my concert-going days of the 80s. I suspect the time the idiots set off a firecracker in the row right behind me. Such fun. People are idiots Yeah, it seems worse now.

So you'd rather release thousands of Chinese and Malaysians?
