Most of the terms that are now used as insults were once medical terms. If you read 100 years old medical literature, you might see the words idiot and imbecile used. This is true, even so why continue to use them? Idiot is now a derogatory term blithely used on this board to insult others when we can no longer tolerate their ignorance or obstinace. It’s no longer a term to be used for mentally impaired people. They don’t deserve that.

Maybe in the future, they won't associate retard with it either. I do not condone using disabilities as insults. I grew up with people around me who used CP (cerebral palsy) a lot as an insult. I still have it in me from then to throw it out from time to time, but I do feel bad afterwards for doing so.

I’ve never heard idiot being used as a medical term during my lifetime (65 years) but we’ve been through mentally retarded through mentally handicapped and ended up with learning disability. I’m sure that’ll end up being used as an insult sooner or later.
