The government has revealed how much companies will have to pay to import foods from Europe due to Brexit. Small imports of products such as fish, salami, sausage, cheese and yoghurt will be subject to a £145 fee from 30 April, according to the Common User Charge. Details about the charges have been postponed several times. The Cold Chain Federation said the new charges would "negatively affect food prices". Its chief executive Phil Pluck said the fee would have to be passed on to "either the EU importer, the smaller UK retailer, or the UK consumer". "Ultimately, this will increase business costs and food prices and potentially lower choices for the shopper," he said. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68726852www.gov.uk/guidance/common-user-charge-rates-and-eligibility

It's a pity that after Brexit the UK government is no longer able to set its own tariffs on the food that we import... oh... but, wait... yes it can! Indeed, now we are no longer in the customs union, we can set whatever import tariffs we like, for anything we like, at any time, any place, anywhere! Nobody else determines these tariffs, just us!
So why's Brexit a problem here? If food import tariffs are found to "increase business costs and food prices and potentially lower choices for the shopper" then we could always reduce them or get rid of then entirely! Not that we'd be able to do so if we were in the Customs Union of course, when we'd have to keep on charging whatever tariffs the EU says we must charge, then hand 80% of all tariff receipts over to Brussels.
Incidentally, don't the trade agreements we sign with the likes of Australia mean that we are about to get flooded with cheap food by countries with lower food standards than us who will undercut our farmers and bring down food prices to the point where our farmers all go out of business unless we raise import food tariffs substantially? Or does that just happen when the whiny remainers want to paint a different story that is completely the opposite to the one they painted before? I wish they'd just choose one story and stick to it.

JRM tries to "argue" with Liz Webster about farming, quality and price of food.
Initially I wanted to present the original video, but Max Robespierre says between 03:00 and 05:00 exactly what I wanted to write, too!
There are several paradoxes overlaying each other.
If You want to pay staff in Rotterdam doing food tests for You, then do it but
- the food gets more expensive, because You have to pay vets (and other staff there) - the team in Rotterdam has to be constantly updated about food standards in Britain, (a moving target at the moment)
so again the central message (and I said it again and again and again)
#1 Food coming from non-EU states via Rotterdam to the UK is not safe if unchecked!
#2 Food coming from EU states to the UK unchecked isn't safe either! (shady EU food producers will find ways to sell stuff that can't be sold in the EU to the UK)

I have never heard Carl or Nobbi mention this before, but apparently the UK is about to be swept by famine and we will all starve to death. Not a bad idea in my case as I could afford to lose a pound or two, so God bless Brexit

Hope your own crop has faired better!

I have never heard Carl or Nobbi mention this before, but apparently the UK is about to be swept by famine and we will all starve to death. You are so absolutely right - neither Carl nor I have claimed that. Anyways - don't worry, Thérèse Coffey has a big cellar of turnips. And Nato could send some military rations by parachute. My real topic here is this obviously deliberate unability to have an honest discussion on anything (in this case farming).
While we are at farming here a lesson in media awareness: This is a German source covering media covering farmer protests in Germany krautreporter.de/politik-und-macht/5291-warum-die-bauern-erfolgreicher-sind-als-die-klimaaktivisten?utm_campaign=pocket-visitorTheir finding: While climate activists had often be accused my media of disturbing trafic in such a way that an accident could happen it didn't happen. On the other side Farmer protests actually did cause accidents (in the case of Germany) but they were far less criticized for doing demonstrations with their tractors. I remember that some years ago in the UK the police even actively tried to find cases where Climate Change protests had led to a death or at least a serious injury (for perhaps an ambulance not coming through) via media. In the case of the farmer protests lately I didn't hear of similar police activities...

As a result of my general decrepitude, I have cut various corners and is so often the case, things appear to be going better as a result. It is early days yet, but the first earlies show promise.
In the UK the farmer's main crops are holiday makers and subsidies, so they brag about the weather (even when it is piddling down with rain) and paucity of their crops (even when it is like the first 7 years in the Land of Caanan)

but Max Robespierre says between 03:00 and 05:00 exactly what I wanted to write, too! Is this the same Max Robespierre who made the video you posted on the Nigel Farage thread that was full of heavy speculation about Nigel Farage getting chucked out of his bank because of dirty Russian money (which turned out to be bullshit) and who then deleted a comment I made (with link provided) to point out the problem with politically exposed people being denied banking facilities was a general one and not just limited to Nigel Farage? If so, I don't give any of his videos an ounce of credence any more. He seems to be happy enough in his own echo chamber without the need to lower his dignity by discussing his views with anybody who might disagree with them.

Nope, sounds like the same old Robespierre Started believing his own bollocks and quite lost his head as a result To repeat what I said in the Nigel thread: the original Max Robespierre was one of the worst despots in history who managed to subvert what might once have been a noble intention behind the French Revolution to create a more equal and democratic nation, and turn it instead into an orgy of bloodshed across the entire country involving the beheading of some 1500 people within a period of 8 weeks, before meeting the same bloody end himself. Quite what prompted this youtube joker to adopt the same pen name is a mystery to me. Were 'Adolf Hitler' and 'Pol Pot' unavailable, or what?

I come to similar conclusions and I repeat myself #1 Food coming from non-EU states via Rotterdam to the UK is not safe if unchecked! #2 Food coming from EU states to the UK unchecked isn't safe either! (shady EU food producers will find ways to sell stuff that can't be sold in the EU to the UK) Why do we need to be in the EU in order for food coming into the UK from Rotterdam or anywhere else to be checked? If the food coming into the UK is not being checked, I can think of a simple solution that would fix this. Can you? Or has decades of brain-atrophying EU membership left us in such a helpless state that we don't know how to check food any more? This is all the same usual bitter remoaner refrain that you let no opportunity to parrot pass you by, isn't it? Waaaaah! The UK is helpless on its own and doesn't know how to do anything by itself any more!!! We must rejoin the EU in order to save us from ourselves!!! If it wasn't all so fucking patronising and boring, I would find it funny.
