Round 2 voting is now open for our Feature Presentation of Movie Night XXVII, to be held on 5/4/24 at 7:05 PM EST.
The theme for this month's movie night is "Star Wars Rip-offs". Choose your favorite eight films from the poll to advance to the next round of voting.
As you may have noticed, this movie night will begin five minutes later than normal, so that everyone who wants to can view the Kentucky Derby.
This vote will automatically lock on 4/19/24 at 7:00 AM EST.
And as always if ties result more or fewer than eight movies, the number of films moving on to the next round will be adjusted up or down by my unchallengeable executive decision.

As much as I love the movie Alien, I think it is the farthest from being a Star Wars ripoff of any movie on the list. But bartlesby didn't reject it so vote for it if you want.

I would have if I'd noticed. Oh well. I'd have also rejected Total Recall, Starship Troopers, and Galaxy Quest outright. Total Recall and Starship Troopers are based on stories which predate Star Wars by decades and are nothing like Star Wars and Galaxy Quest is a Star Trek parody. Good movies, mind, but about as close to Star Wars rip-offs as 2001. Flash Gordon is debatable since it predates Star Wars but I'd give it a pass since it was clearly released to cash in on the Star Wars craze. Spaceballs is fine, despite it being a parody and not a rip-off, because parody still technically rips off elements from the original to lampoon them. I'd begrudgingly let Serenity slide because it has a similar "space western" style with a rag-tag crew of weirdos. There's got to be some leeway. I don't blame you or myself for this result as it was not our fault. No, I blame the people who nominated the films. I point the finger at them. The only acceptable pick is Battle Beyond the Stars.

Right now it is on the bubble. I suggest campaigning, calling in favors, and threatening to get votes.
