Thanks for hosting dsbeadle Seen two of yours... Sharkey’s Machine (1981, Burt Reynolds) - I only have very vague memories of this one, still think I have the soundtrack album. 6,5/10. Single White Female (1992, Barbet Schroeder) - Same thing goes for this one, vague memories. 6/10. Here are mine... A Quiet Place 2018 directed by John Krasinski. Interesting opposite idea of Alien and in space nobody can hear you scream, in this movie after an alien invasion they can hear you scream, but they can't smell or see. They only attack if there is a sound ever so little, so the family we follow only use sign language. Well it's not my kind of Horror Science Fiction but It wasn't too bad. 6,5/10. Just Getting Started 2017 directed by Ron Shelton. Starring Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Rene Russo Is this the future for seasoned actors, to appear in half baked movies, it's a shame throwing that much talent and experience into garbage like this, with not even a half decent joke. Guess it's supposed to be funny. 2/10. Top Gun 1986 directed by Tony Scott. I absolutely hated this movie on first release, it's dangerously manipulative, even in Sweden 16-21 y/o suddenly wanted to be fighter pilots, and why? so they could party and lay girls and always be excused for great flight maneuvers. If I hadn't seen this movie I wouldn't have got many jokes in Hot Shots, and I actually liked Berlin's "Take My Breathe Away". Re-watched it again now many years later to see if I was wrong, well I don't think so. 4/10. The Italian Job 1969 directed by Peter Collinson. Some of the swinging 60's jokes are dead, but otherwise it's still an entertaining caper movie. 7/10. Pierrot Le Fou 1965 directed by Jean-Luc Godard. French New Wave that would break barriers and make better movies, it was said. Since I could watch this free and legal I thought I could try, couple go on a spree from Paris to the Riviera, smoking tons of cigarettes. There is no actual structure. The colors have been beautifully restored. 5/10. The Last Command 1955 directed by Frank Lloyd. Another retelling of the battle of the Alamo and what led up to that battle. As a history lesson it's probably worthless, but as a movie it was actually well-crafted and effective with a good balance between action and drama. Lot's of familiar actors/faces of that era, with Sterling Hayden really good as Jim Bowie. 6,5/10. A Quiet Place 2018 directed by John Krasinski. Interesting concept with a capable cast, but the movie fell apart for me at the end. One major character's death came over as unnecessary and contrived. - 6/10. Top Gun 1986 directed by Tony Scott. Not a fan of this either, but I haven't seen it for ages and have little interest in a rewatch. 4.5/10. The Italian Job 1969 directed by Peter Collinson. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer the 2003 remake. I found the original too silly. 5/10.

Hey Dark, Yours: Memento (2000, Chris Nolan) 9/10 (This is one of my first batch of ratings before i got a feel for things so i would probably rate this lower on a rewatch) Single White Female (1992, Barbet Schroeder) 6/10 Mine: 1) Mongol 2007 (6/10) 2) Moolaadé 2003 (6/10) 3) Moonfall 2022 (5/10) 4) Morbius 2022 (6/10) 5) The Morning After 1986 (5/10) 6) Morituri 1965 (6/10) 7) The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones 2013 (6/10) 8) The Mortal Storm 1940 (7/10) 9) Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears 1980 (5/10) TV Series 1) Keeping Up Appearances Season 2 1991 (5/10) Hey SJG, 1) Mongol 2007 - I thought it was interesting, perhaps lacking a bit in the emotional department, but otherwise a solid epic. Not sure why the planned sequels never materialised. (7/10)

First Time Viewing: Ghost In The Shell (1995; Mamoru Oshii) – You can tell that this Japanese manga adaptation was one of the main inspirations for The Matrix with its cyberpunk world and philosophical questions of identity and the nature of reality. It’s just that I find The Matrix to be far more accessible and ultimately a superior movie, since Ghost seems really convoluted and to me at least lacked any relatable characters. 5/10 Love & Mercy (2014; Bill Pohlad) – Biopic of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, dealing with his life at the height of his fame in the 60s and his later struggle with depression and schizophrenia in the 80s. Well-acted and interesting, but I would’ve preferred more music and less drama. 6/10 TV Crimes Of Passion (2013) – Swedish mystery series based on the works of popular crime writer Maria Lang (the Swedish Agatha Christie). It’s sadly a rather pedestrian affair lacking suspense or the titular passion. The two leads Tuva Novotny and Ola Rapace are not bad, but the whole thing has the appeal of an IKEA showroom with lifeless period sets and a bad handling of the source material. 5/10 Hey Raven, Just one of yours: Ghost In The Shell (1995; Mamoru Oshii) 6/10

Welcome to the weekly watch thread hosted by me, post your weeks viewing, rate other peoples viewing, have conversations but be respectful. FIRST TIME VIEWINGFreebie and the Bean (1974, Richard Rush)This might be the original buddy cop film that surely influenced the 48 hours and lethal weapons of this sub-genre.
The story is a mess but it’s the least important part of the film. The joy is watching all the different situations and art pieces that allow James Caan and Alan Arkin to interact in a semi improvised manner.
The chemistry of these two leads is what holds this wild film together. 6.5-7/10Deadpool & Wolverine (2024, Sean Levy)CinemaSo this long gestating third Deadpool film had the selling of Fox to Disney to contend with, then a pandemic and an actors/directors strike. What we end up feels a bit compromised but it’s still fun enough. What I loved about the first film and to a slightly lesser extent the second also is the balancing act between the excess, parodic comedy and goofiness on one side and the heart to the story on the other that anchors it. This one doesn’t have a lot of heart and relies on the comedy to get it through and it still entertains but is not as good a film as the first two. What it is though os a love letter to the Fox era of X-Men films that also takes potshots at the state of the current mcu with some fun cameos. Id prefer a smaller more focused grittier film with some real emotional stakes but this was an okay send off that was at least very funny in its messiness. 6/10Sharkey’s Machine (1981, Burt Reynolds)This is a gritty cop film starring Burt Reynolds that starts like a Dirt Harry film. It doesn’t keep up its momentum and becomes kinda weaker as it goes along. 6/10Outcasts of the Island (1951, Carol Reed)A typically well crafted and attractive Carol Reed film. The characters are not too likable but it’s quite watchable still and doesn’t outstay its welcome. 6/10Everybody Wins (1990, Karel Reisz)I generally like these kind of neonoir films even the bad ones are watchable. This one sees Angela (Debra Winger) who hires/lures a P.I. (Nick Nolte) to prove a convicted teenager is innocent of his uncle's murder. This has a bad script, people seem like they are in different movies than one another throughout. Debra Winger is really bad and the love relationship is not believable. 4/10Deer Camp ‘86 (2024, L. Van Dyke Sinoutszen)Slasher in the woods film set in 1986 (although no one feels like they are from the 80’s). Its low budget and pulls from Friday the 13th, The Evil Dead and Predator. It’s just not very good though and the third act is weak. 4/10REPEAT VIEWINGMemento (2000, Chris Nolan)blu rayAm overdue rewatch of this low budget now noir that plays in reverse. Still holds up. 8/10Single White Female (1992, Barbet Schroeder)Solid 90s erotic thriller that was better crafted than I remembered. It starts to wear a little thin after a while though. 6/10WEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Memento BEST ACTOR: James Caan - Freebie & the Bean BEST ACTRESS: Bridgette Fonda - Single White Female BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Joey Pants - Memento BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Carrie Ann Moss - Memento BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Wally Pfister - Memento BEST SCORE: David Julyan - Memento BEST EDITING: Dody Dorn - Memento BEST WRITING: Chris Nolan - Memento BEST DIRECTOR: Chris Nolan - Memento Hi, Dark. Here I am. I've been meaning to watch Freebie & the Bean. I just saw the beginning once. I read Stanley Kubrick was a big fan. Yours: Sharkey's Machine 7/10 I thought it was O.K., I loved Burt and the cast. It does fall a bit as it goes on though, yeah. The opening is fantastic. Everybody Wins 5/10 Ah, you watched it right away. I mostly thought it was kind of dull. Memento 8.5/10 I loved it. I haven't watched it in quite some time though. Single White Female 8/10 I like it. I loved both Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. I thought it was quite nice visually too. Mine: Twisters 8/10 It's the sequel with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell. I liked it, I thought it was a blast. The special effects are pretty cool, they used practical ones mostly. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are great together. Curse of the Crimson Altar 6.5/10 It's a horror movie with Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff and Barbara Steele. It's about an antique dealer who goes for looking for his brother who apparently went missing in a small village and the Cult of a witch burned at the stakes centuries before might have something to do wiht it. It's not bad, it's a bit goofy and tongue in cheek at times, I'm not sure the ending makes much sense, but I didn't mind it. Barbara Steele plays the witch, she's not in it much though, actually. Both Christopher Lee and Boris Karloff are good. Underwold U.S.A 8/10 It's a Samuel Fuller movie, with Cliff Robertson. It's about a criminal who witnessed, as a teen, the murder of his father commited by some mob guys, he finds out he finally might get the chance get his revenge and he starts working for it. I like it, it's pretty tense and gritty. Cliff Robertson is good in the lead role. I like Dolores Dorn too, she plays a woman working for the mob, he falls in love with. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit 5/10 It's the Kenneth Branagh version, with Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley. It basically follows Jack Ryan as he joins the CIA after getting seriously injured in Afghanistan. He discovers that the head of a shady Russian corporation plans to crash US economy to the point of disrupting the whole society. I didn't like it much, it's kind of bland and dull mostly, IMO.

5/10 Sadly not seen any of yours. In yesteryears we hardly made any detective or murder mystery shows in Sweden, now we seems to spit them out by the dozens so it's nearly impossible to keep track on all of them. Never heard of this Maria Lang series and never read any of her books.

Hi, Dark. [img style="max-width:100%;" alt=" " class="smile" src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/vgLBpEcxOoWPYfNnRNqL.gif"] Here I am. [img alt=" " class="smile" style="max-width:100%;" src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/CBubFSUbXfyoLMZUjeBb.gif"] I've been meaning to watch Freebie & the Bean. [img class="smile" alt=" " style="max-width:100%;" src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/CBubFSUbXfyoLMZUjeBb.gif"] I mostly thought it was kind of dull. Memento 8.5/10 I loved it. I haven't watched it in quite some time though. Single White Female 8/10 I like it. [img alt=" " class="smile" style="max-width:100%;" src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/fDNOMYWwtDsMxdpbcTXP.gif"] I loved both Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. I thought it was quite nice visually too. Mine: Twisters 8/10 It's the sequel with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell. I liked it, I thought it was a blast. [img src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/fDNOMYWwtDsMxdpbcTXP.gif" style="max-width:100%;" alt=" " class="smile"] The special effects are pretty cool, they used practical ones mostly. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are great together. [img alt=" " class="smile" style="max-width:100%;" src="http://storage.proboards.com/6870873/images/CBubFSUbXfyoLMZUjeBb.gif"] Barbara Steele plays the witch, she's not in it much though, actually. Hey Billy :) Underworld USA - this one rules, pretty gritty stuff, I’m a fan, have the blu ray 8/10 Yeah, it's not my favourite from Samuel Fuller, I think, but it's pretty good. Any interest in Twisters?

None of yours this week. I'd recommend Twisters, I think you'd like it. Curse of the Crimson Altar has an alternate title that I have the impression is more used, The Crimson Cult, I don't know if that rings a bell. The title in the credits of the version I saw was the Curse one though.
