Yesterday I put up a unit that can take 512 DVDs in theory, although I think it only takes about 456. Anyway most of my collection is on it now.

I'm just about to sell all of my DVDs and get rid of the units storing them.

Got rid of hundreds of DVDs a year or so ago, ripped anything I wanted to memory stick and got rid of the rest to save space. Kept Blu Ray for time being and have a nice little 4k collection but find I struggle to find the time to keep up with series and shows on Netflix and Prime, let alone anything else. As an aside I watched the "Stan And Ollie" biopic last night which focuses on the tail end of their career when grubbing around variety gigs in Britain. Great little film.

I’ll probably keep all of my DVDs, and I have many like the OP. The storage burden is significant, but unless I bang up some bird or otherwise need the space, I’d like to keep my DVDs. You never know when you have a hankering to see American Ninja 3 and there’s no guarantee that it will be available by the streaming services.

That is exactly, precisely the point.
OK, the days you'd have DVDs just for something to watch when there wasn't anything on TV are over. But having the things you really value available as and when you want them, without being subject to the diktat of some streaming controller, is still a thing of value.

If your collection is full of all that black and white hissy sound track stuff, fine, but what if you're only interested in Fast and Furious and Transformers?

I think it also comes down to how much of a collector one is. For space reasons I got rid of about 2 thousand vinyl albums and it still hurts me to think about it now two years later. there is also the option of getting rid of the cases and just keeping discs in containers that hold a couple of hundred each but that would be tough for collector types also.

No wonder lefties needs benefits when they spend all of their money on music and drugs. By the way, what do you mean by 'got rid'?

Still kept about 1000 but gave a few hundred away to friends who were interested and the rest to charity shops. Should say I had replaced most of them with CD versions anyway and recently got rid of about 800 cds as I have everything on memory cards on high def players and backed up to the cloud. Just moving with the times. Won't go below FLAC quality if I can help it although 320 is acceptable.

Another angle I forgot about: who has internet that's 100% reliable all of the time, every time? I certainly don't, so sometimes the streaming service just isn't there.

I use BT and it's expensive but always 100% reliable. I have heard the internet's pretty crap in the US though.

I use BT and it's expensive but always 100% reliable. Same here. I might be switching to them soon for mobile as well (after 19 years of Orange/EE!) as they are the only ones that have the phone I want in the colour I want.
