I remember in K, in a public school, in the early 80's, in SC the teacher forcing kids to say a devotion, prayer, bible passage right before lunch. By forcing I mean grading kids on how well they learned it that day and recited. This was endorsed and backed by the admins. Well me being me memorized mine Matthew 6:9-13 the Lords Prayer well enough so when I got home I recited it to my Mom. And she blew her stack. She came to the school the next day with me and laid into the K teacher...
Was my Mom some Liberal Separation Church and State Fanatic? No She screamed at my teacher because I had learned the NIV version not the KJ version. It's been forever but I think the main difference is the use of Debit and Debtor vs Trespass and Trespasser. She didn't mind that a Representative of the State was Endorsing and Instructing 4-6 year olds a specific Religion. No she was pissed it wasn't her version of the Religion being Endorsed/Instructed.
