I recall news stories of college students asking their school administration to stock suicide pills on campus. Crackpot sissies. What for? Back then it was an estimated 30 minutes or less for the whole nuclear missile deployment thing to be over with. Now that the process is streamlined to a great extent, now it is more like 12 or 15 minutes from the time you get the alert. Although as incompetent as the current administration is, you might not get an alert at all. Back when Ronald Reagan was president,it was generally agreed by both sides that the population of citizens needed 30 minutes in which to make their final arrangements. So certain considerations were taken into account to make that possible such as formal declarations of war before taking any real action. However, in todays climate of lack of trust between the governments of nations, those considerations designed to let citizens have time to make their final arrangements are no longer likely to be honored or implemented. Therefore from a practical standpoint it would most likely happen suddenly without warning. Actually, the 30 minute time remains, because that's the time it takes for an ICBM to get from it's silo in Russia to what probably is either Anchorage Alaska or Omaha Nebraska. The 15-12 would be sub-launched missiles, primarily to take out command and control centers, and as a secondary response.
