I'm watching Rogue nation on CBS (great to see networks show movies) and just keep thinking a GI Joe or even Mask movie in this tone would be fantastic. It pushes the boundaries of reality without being outright moronic like the last 8 F&F movies.

Cobra are similar to the Wagner Group. So there is a real-world context.
MASK has massive potential. It has elements of X-Men, Transformers, Fast & Furious and Iron Man. The vehicles have practical functions: street legal civilian machines that convert to heavy artillery and flight capability. It’s not as silly as the conceit behind the Transformers premise. The villains could pull off heists or terrorism in cars and change to planes and tanks mid-chase. And even without the vehicles the MASKS themselves are interesting. They all contain different powers like telekinesis and lasers so they could have super-powered battles. The leaders of each faction kind of have a Tony Stark/ Jebediah Stane relationship. MASK just makes so much sense as a blockbuster.

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. Something between the styles of F&F and Mission Impossible would be the right fit.

It's not a popular enough franchise and if it did somehow happen, I see it being more cartoony (current GI Joe and Transformers movies, F&F) rather than something like the last 3 MI movies, which are so fine tuned they are even better than the first three. They take impossible things and make them look and feel rather, rather than absurd and outlandish.
I do see GI Joe being rebooted again, but I don't think these studios are smart enough to make it like MI. A GI Joe or MASK movie with the execition of MI would be ridiculous.

MASK won’t happen anytime soon but it is possible that it will find new fans if there is a cartoon reboot in the future. I’m just saying it’s possible because it has the potential to succeed if it is given a chance.

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. Something between the styles of F&F and Mission Impossible would be the right fit. MI movies have things every bit as impossible as GI Joe. People with (believable) rubber mask, crazy futuristic tec, etc. They're not military movies. They are even more believable than a lot of Bond movies. Imagine the colorful characters of GI Joe or Mask in that style? It would kill in theaters!

Though a producer said they were making a new G.I. Joe movie.

I think if they got someone like Christopher McQuarrie or the John Wick guys, they might pull it off.

Instead of this?

It should follow the original designs and premise as closely as possible but have a large body count. I'm less concerned with the look of it than I am the tone. Concentrate on a decent story, and how to work some great set pieces into that. The trick for the studio is deciding on how serious to take it. You're trying to capitalize on IP derived from a toy line, so the natural inclination is to make it soft and borderline silly. But those of us who grew up with GI Joe (and let's be honest, we're the only real audience for this movie) are adults who want hard R action at this point. The movies we got were GI Joe in name only; if they're going to do that, the least you can do is go balls to the wall with the action. If they dare to make it R rated, we could really be on to something.

You’re right about the tone but I consider the look to be important for the fact that with old franchises, they succeeded for a reason and changes to designs are risky and rarely pay off.

Yeah I agree, I want the characters to be the characters. Otherwise it's just some movie called GI Joe, which was part of the problem with the other ones. They should, I don't know, actually read the old comics and get a feel for who the characters are and come up with some slick costumes that look like functional representations of what we know. It really shouldn't be that difficult.

From the director for RotB: Caple, speaking with EW separately, confirms he's deep into developing the Rise of the Beasts sequel. "It is definitely gonna incorporate some Joes characters, but it won't go into, maybe, the true origins of the Joes."
"The idea of trying to do the whole Joe world at the same time is a little daunting," Di Bonaventure confirms. "This is a way to bring them into our world, remind people of who they are, and they'll have a role in the plot."ew.com/movies/transformers-g-i-joe-crossover-plans/
